The paddle has been raised
This is the ratchet attached to the rod which is attached to the paddle which controls water flow through a culvert and into Top Half Mile Lock (No 25) on the Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section). As you can see, I have raised it fully with my windlass, which was attached to the square bit halfway up the apparatus, causing this: Link Many of the locks have two or four more paddles attached to the gates, but this lock just has two ground paddles, one each side of the canal. It is important to wind these down carefully using the windlass. Dropping them suddenly can cause damage which can stop the use of the lock. Also, as with all paddles, it is not recommended to leave your windlass on the apparatus while it is up. If the ratchet slips, and the paddle drops suddenly, the windlass can whizz round and fly off, smashing your teeth and/or re-arranging other features on your face.
