The gabled entrance on the left is near the north-western corner of the burial ground; it is also shown in NN6008 : Entrance to Kilmahog Burial Ground and NN6008 : Entrance to St. Chug's Graveyard. The small building at the centre of the picture was the watch-house. The entrance and watch-house are shown from the other side in NN6008 : Kilmahog: St Chug's graveyard.

A plaque in the foreground marks the spot the pre-reformation chapel stood, although no traces of its foundations are now visible on the ground: NN6008 : Plaque marking former site of chapel.

Although some writers have linked the name Kilmahog to a supposed "St Mahog" (the Mo-Chúóc mentioned below?), the name more probably signifies the (monastic) cell of St Chùg (or Cùg).

(In "Kilma-" or "Kilmo-" place-names, the "ma/mo" element is often not a part of the saint's name, but instead means "my", indicating a respectful affection.)

From W J Watson's "Celtic Place-Names of Scotland" (1926): "Cill Mo-Chùg, Kilmahog near Callander, contains the name Cùg which is anglicized as Cook, an Islay surname. The commemoration can hardly be one of Mo-Chúóc, a saint given by Gorman and Mart. Don. at Oct. 21, with the note 'ua Liathain'. It may be one of Cuaca, Jan. 8 (Gorman), of Cell Chuaca, later Cell Choca, on the border of Meath. ... Kilmahog fair was held on Nov. 15".

The burial ground was associated with a pre-Reformation chapel; the latter is gone, but its site is marked by a plaque within the burial ground. The name Kilmahog suggests a dedication to a Saint Chùg (or Cùg). Kilmahog Parish was in existence by 1259, but later became part of Callander Parish.
