A view across from the minor road below Cademuir Hill to the pastures around Woodhouse farm, R of centre.

Of some historical interest is the left-most cottage. Part of the right-hand half was the home of Davie Ritchie (1740 - 1811), the 'Black Dwarf'. Its door was 3 feet 6 inches high, to match his own height; his sister dwelt in the other half of the cottage. Ritchie was a good gardener and grew vegetables and kept bees. Sir Walter Scott paid him a visit in July 1797 and the visit made such an impression that he used it as the basis for his novel 'The Black Dwarf'. A headstone for David Ritchie was erected in Kirkton churchyard in 1845 by William and Robert Chambers, the publisher brothers from Peebles.
