St. Andrew's Church, Newgate Street, NE1
It is thought that there was a Saxon church on the current site of St. Andrew’s, although nothing of that age now remains. Parts of the church are Norman, including the outstanding chancel arch, although building continued into the 15th C. There were additions in the 18th C and “restoration” in the 19th C. The building is long and low, with a short, chunky tower that was used as a gun emplacement to cover the northwest section of the Town Walls in the Civil War of the 1640s. Further information is given on the church's website Link
. The church is Grade I listed Link
