Descending to the Lower Roy
Descending to the Lower Roy
Paddlers take the River Roy in three sections, Upper, Middle (Roy Gorge), and Lower. This footpath is a useful escape upwards if the most serious section, the Roy gorge, has taken longer than hoped and daylight, water levels or energy are failing. Many paddlers regard it as an unattractive slog, though, and will continue on the river into the dusk, rock bash or exhaustion, rather than climb its slippery, muddy zigzags to the road. Alternatively, it is the descent route to reach the put-on for the easier Lower River, which, with sufficient water, can be followed with no great difficulty to take out at Roy Bridge or the Spean confluence.
