GPO telephone cable marker, High Hesket
Located just behind the red car in this photo NY4744 : Hesket House .
We were pleased to find this, having seen similar examples on the Geograph website - J4982 : GPO cable marker, Downshire Road, Bangor gives a good explanation of their function.
The iron posts have a royal cypher at the top, an early one with VR is shown here SP3165 : Leamington-Old Warwick Road . The shape of the crown appears to be the same on all of them regardless of reign (unlike on letter boxes). The marker at High Hesket says ER - it looks pretty ancient so we'd guess it dates from the Edwardian rather than the Elizabethan era.
