Small rapid on the Upper Roy
Small rapid on the Upper Roy
Apart from one named rapid, there is little to give the paddler trouble on the Upper Roy, which is mostly punctuated by small rapids like this one, with good visibility and little fall. The river is incised into the former (glacially impounded) lake bed, which limits the view from river level for much of the distance and correspondingly makes it a little difficult to reconnoitre all the rapids from the road. The small waterfall on river left where Allt Coire Chouplaig drops in makes a good landmark for this one, should you need it.

On the slopes of Lana Mhr and Carn Bhrunachain behind, all three parallel roads, representing eroded beaches of the lake's stands at 350, 326 and 261m above sea level are clearly visible.
