Kayakers approaching Rooster Tail on the Upper Roy
Kayakers approaching Rooster Tail on the Upper Roy
A "Rooster Tail" is a point in a rapid where water is sprayed upwards by some obstacle, usually a rock, and the one on this rapid is sufficiently distinctive that the rapid has been named after it. It can be seen just right of centre foreground in this photo, which shows a Glenmore Lodge kayaking group (their Advanced Grand Rivers Tour) heading for the rapid on the Upper River Roy. This is the hardest rapid on the upper section, the only one which benefits from prior inspection (easiest on the drive up the valley), and it forms a good warm-up for the much more difficult Roy Gorge section which follows downstream. The line, at most levels, is close to the photographer's feet, staying right until past the hole, then dropping leftwards into the main flow.
