The Great Gathering
On the 3rd July 1938, the A4 class locomotive Mallard raced down Stoke Bank at 126mph to set a new steam locomotive world speed record. That record still stands. To mark the 75th anniversary of Mallard's achievement, the National Railway Museum is displaying Mallard alongside its five surviving sister locomotives.
Only six of the 35 A4 locomotives built survive in the world. Dwight D Eisenhower and Dominion of Canada are here in York from their home museums in Canada and the USA for the celebrations.
