SK8832 : Transitional capital
taken 11 years ago, near to Harlaxton, Lincolnshire, England
Transitional capital
Re-cut in a 19th century restoration, but a good example of a capital from the architectural transition from Norman (or Romanesque) to the first Gothic (Early English) architectural style. A round pier with round capital becoming square with a sort of stiff-leaf / ribbed crocket carving and a square abacus, springing to a pointed arch. Late 12th / early 13th century.
