Bournemouth: Diamond Jubilee Plaque (7)
Bournemouth: Diamond Jubilee Plaque (7)
The seventh in a series of fifteen plaques unveiled to mark the Queen's diamond jubilee in 2012, following the history of Bournemouth through the ages using monarchs' reigns and jubilees as the steps in time.

This seventh one relates to the reign of Victoria, between her silver and golden jubilees (i.e. 1862-1887). The pier is replaced twice during this time, the wooden one by a cast iron structure in 1886 and again following storm damage in 1880. The railway is discouraged by residents because of dirt, noise and the arrival of a lower class of people but it nevertheless opens in 1870. The Westover Shrubberies are transformed in 1873 into the Lower Gardens, which are still enjoyed today just over the wall on which these plaques are mounted.

See SZ0890 : Bournemouth: Diamond Jubilee Plaques for the introductory plaque, and SZ0890 : Bournemouth: five of the Diamond Jubilee Plaques for an overall view of five of the plaques, providing some context.

See SZ0890 : Bournemouth: Diamond Jubilee Plaque (6) for the previous plaque in the series, and SZ0890 : Bournemouth: Diamond Jubilee Plaque (8) for the next one.
