Waiting for the lights
On the evening that the 2013 Hyde Christmas Lights were switched on there was entertainment on the Civic Square including some fairground rides. On the right is the children's roundabout SJ9494 : Christmas Carousel that has been a permanent fixture here for a century. In the middle is a "teapot-carousel" SJ9494 : Teapot carousel with the children riding in huge teacups. Outside the White Lion a stallholder is selling "lightsticks".
Cooke's Children's Carousel
The roundabout on Hyde Market was manufactured by Halsteads of Sowerby Bridge in 1897. It was established on Hyde Market in 1919 by John William (Jack) Greaves. In the 1920s he passed it to his daughter Lily and her husband Bill Cooke. It has now been in the Cooke family for three generations.
