Exchange, Corn Street, Bristol (2)
An exquisite example of John Wood the Elder's architecture, one of the country's finest Palladian buildings. The proportions, and the amount and disposition of ornament are superb. Plus, any building in Bath stone has a head start in the attractiveness stakes. Above a rusticated ground floor with central arched entrance are Corinthian pilasters, windows with alternating pediments, a frieze of festoons and masks (ST5873 : Detail of Exchange, Corn Street, Bristol), a central pediment and balustraded parapet. Built 1741-43. Grade I listed.
The merchants who once traded here have of course long since departed the scene, and now the building houses offices and a covered market.
