Demolition of the old building which stood on the corner has opened up the view of the Britannia Panopticon music hall and other interesting buildings on the south side of Trongate.

The building on the left is a Category B Listed LinkExternal link former warehouse at the corner of King Street.

The red sandstone building in the centre is also a Category B Listed LinkExternal link former warehouse which was built for the City Improvement Trust.

To its right is the Britannia Panopticon music hall, which is the oldest surviving music hall in the world and is Category A Listed LinkExternal link . Stan Laurel made his debut there as a teenager. See also NS5964 : Britannia Panopticon Music Hall & NS5964 : Stan Laurel blue plaque.
City Improvement Trust

The City Improvement Trust was a body which was set up to improve the squalid living conditions that existed in many parts of Glasgow in the latter half of the nineteenth century.

Visits to Paris by the trustees influenced the adoption of the traditional tenement house style (typical of Baron Haussman LinkExternal link ) to rehouse many thousands of Glaswegians.
