The original Norman church, of around 1130, on this site was considerably smaller, covering the area between the tower wall and the east wall, and between the pillars north and south of the nave. The tower was built c 1270. The north aisle was added c 1350 and enlarged c 1400. The south aisle was added c 1370 and enlarged in the second half of the 15th C to match the north aisle; the south transept was also added. At the same time, the nave walls were heightened and the clerestory inserted.

The fabric has remained substantially unchanged since then, although the east and north walls of the chancel were rebuilt by John Dobson in 1848. In the major restoration of 1861-1875 the galleries were removed, new floors laid, the chancel arch rebuilt and new pews installed.
