Conwy County Borough Council operates a policy of kerbside collection of food waste, plastic, cardboard, cartons, batteries, paper, cans and glass every week. Garden waste, textiles, books, music, films and refuse are collected fortnightly. Everything is collected in one vehicle, which keeps fuel costs low and protects the environment. Recycling is stored in separate compartments on a fleet of 21 colourful trucks.
Currently they are able to recycle 57% of waste in Conwy and the aim is to go further to the point of zero landfill by 2050.
For example, in the period April - October 2013, the following tonnage was processed:- Food 2,195 tons much of which emerges as garden compost material; Cans 235 tons; Aluminium 63 tons; Paper 1,700 tons; Plastic 667 tons; Card 468 tons and Glass 1,800 tons.
