The site of the rock cannon on Moel-y-Gest
There are many rock cannons in north Wales, created by quarrymen and consisting of a series of holes drilled in the rock. When there was a celebration - a Jubilee or such like - the holes were filled with gunpowder and a trail of gun powder laid between them. The start of the trail was ignited and then.....I imagine that the resulting flashes and bangs were quite spectacular.
The Moel-y-Gest cannon is one of the larger ones, with 19 holes.
