This is the southern part of the culvert. It was originally built in the 1850s, to make way for Spencer's steelworks. The culvert lies some 12m below present ground level and, including the northern section, is around 180m long. An open section in the middle runs through a steeply sided wooded valley. The southern culvert is approximately 2.6m wide and 1.9m high and is built of substantial arched brickwork, four courses thick on dressed masonry blocks. It has been substantially rebuilt following a recent burst which caused considerable damage to buildings in the valley.
