"Candlelight" in St John's Street
A "Richardson Candle" streetlight illuminates Hardy's Sweetshop with the intended sympathetic lighting. The second one illuminates St John's College Chapel. There are also some Christmas lights.
"Richardson Candle" streetlights
These vertical fluorescent lights were designed by architect Sir Albert Richardson in 1957 and were intended to illuminate the buildings in the historic centre of Cambridge as well as the pavements. Free-standing ones had a classical fluted column, inspired by the REVO "Festival" lights commissioned for several towns for the Festival of Britain in 1951. Others were mounted directly on buildings.

By modern standards the "candles" give poor levels of light, and maintenance costs are heavy. As of 2011 it looks likely that they will be replaced as part of the County Council's general renewal of its street lighting stock.
