River God Tyne Fountain, Newcastle Civic Centre
The University of Newcastle's SINE project website says "This bronze statue is actually a fountain. Water is meant to run down the figure's head from his raised hand. It was created by the artist David Wynne in 1968 and represents the River Tyne. It is based on a stone carving of about 1785 which decorates the front of Somerset House in London. In the original carving the River God is shown as having long, straggly hair with fish, picks, shovels and grain entwined in it. All of these things represent trade and industry associated with the River Tyne" - see Link
. The shadows on the right hand side are from the NZ2465 : Newcastle Civic Centre - turret.
