NT3074 : Portobello kilns from across the Figgate Burn
taken 10 years ago, near to Portobello, Edinburgh, Scotland
These two kilns in Portobello are now being restored and repaired, to preserve the legacy of the Scottish pottery industry. They were part of the pottery of A.W. Buchan & Co and built in 1906 and 1909 – they are B-listed Link and the last visible remnants of the pottery industry in Scotland. I have lived in Edinburgh for almost 50 years and had no idea that they existed! They have been recorded by five other Geographers, so the progress of their restoration since 1994 can be followed by visiting NT3074 : Portobello., NT3074 : Old kiln, Portobello, NT3074 : Portobello pottery kilns, Pipe Street, NT3074 : Portobello pottery kilns, Pipe Street, NT3074 : Bottle ovens, Portobello, NT3074 : Portobello Kilns, and my images of 16 Dec. 2013.
