Time ball hoisted, Old Royal Greenwich Observatory
The time ball drops at 13.00 GMT precisely; here it has been hoisted half way up at 12.56. Time balls were provided so that mariners in nearby ships could set their chronometers accurately by observing the ball through a telescope, taking the initial drop of the ball as the time signal. This one was installed in 1833.
Of course, time balls are now obsolete but are kept as items of historial interest.
