SX9164 : St Mary Magdalene church, Upton, TorquayThe architect of St Mary Magdalene was Anthony Salvin in 1843-9. This
postcard by Nicholas Horne of Totnes, taken around 1970, shows what Pevsner calls the "riotous chancel" begun under George Gilbert Scott in 1881 and completed in 1906 with the gigantic statues of Christ and the Patriarchs above Scotts reredos which shows the Crucifixion and scenes from the purported life of Mary Magdalene. According to Pevsner and Cherry (1989) the walls have been painted a "shrieking red".
