Looking in the Bassingfield direction from Tollerton Bridge. This bridge - on the west side of Nottingham - carries Tollerton Lane between the Gamston Lings Bar dual carriageway (i.e. the A52 Nottingham-Grantham Road) past Nottingham City Airport (a private aerodrame). This almost derelict canal runs for 53 kms (33 miles) from Grantham to West Bridgford - through 18 locks - where it joins the River Trent. Its primary function was to transport coal to Grantham. It was opened in 1797 and closed in 1936. However, because it was used to provide water for agricultural purposes, most of the canal continued to be maintained in a watertight state, although its bridges were lowered. Since the 1970s, the Grantham Canal Society have been working towards restoring it, and as a result, two stretches are now navigable to small vessels. Full restoration, it seems, will require the construction of a new section at the point where the canal joins the River Trent because road building has effectively severed the original route.
