Kew Bridge Steam Museum - Trench engine
This is a Shand Mason steam fire engine of c1863-70 that was initially supplied to the Metropolitan Fire Brigade but then acquired by the Southwark and Vauxhall Waterworks Co and used for draining trenches or flooded properties - hence trench engine. The company was later absorbed into the Metropolitan Water Board. The engine has been extensively rebuilt with several boilers and engines and the current engine was designed and built c1908 in the Hampton Waterworks workshops. It was a truly vile day.
The Kew Bridge Steam Museum closed at 1600 on 1st Jan 2014 and will reopen under a new name in March 2014 following a major redevelopment funded by the Lottery. It is the place in London for steam power and water supply history and is worth a visit.
