The Sainsbury's Local was built in 2013 on the site of the demolished Angel Hotel. Link
More than 1,700 people had signed a petition opposing the store's construction because of fears it would undermine local trade and cause traffic congestion, but Newport City Council approved the project in the summer of 2012. About 25 new jobs have been created. Link to another view.

Sainsbury's was founded in London in 1869 by John James Sainsbury and his wife Mary Ann. By 1922 it had become the UK's largest grocery retailer, a position which lasted until 1995 when Tesco became the market leader.
