Castleton Peveril Castle-Derbyshire
Castleton Peveril Castle-Derbyshire
The castle has looked down from its high perch since it was built by William Peverel, one of the Conqueror's trusted knights soon after 1066. The keep was built in 1176 by Henry II sometime after which the castle declined in importance but was used as a prison for a time. These days, the only invaders are visitors to the site, held back by a small staff and the opening hours of English Heritage. Time taken 3.35 pm GMT (Greenwich Mean Time).
