On 'The Forest'
The Forest is actually an area of high, rough moorland with a few scattered outcrops of rock and virtually no trees. The local parish is called Fawcett Forest and the forest part of the name probably refers to a mediaeval 'forest' or hunting area. Beyond is the rugged spur of Nab End with the Whinash ridge beyond that which was proposed as the site for a giant wind farm about ten years ago (thankfully thrown out after a public inquiry).
