Castlerigg Stone Circle
Castlerigg Stone Circle
At about 5000 years old, Castlerigg is one of the earliest of British stone circles, and certainly the most dramatically sited, surrounded as it is by stunning views of the fells. The view here is towards Helvellyn. It is interesting to note the evidence of ridge and furrow cultivation in the grassland surrounding the stone circle, presumably remnants of mediaeval agriculture.
