The Black Gate, Newcastle upon Tyne
Built c1250 at the behest of Henry III at a cost of 514, 15s. 11d. and protected by moats, drawbridges and iron portcullises, the Black Gate was latterly the principal entrance to the castle. The upper storeys were rebuilt in the 17th century.
