The Black Gate, Newcastle upon Tyne
Built c1250 at the behest of Henry III at a cost of £514, 15s. 11d. and protected by moats, drawbridges and iron portcullises, the Black Gate was latterly the principal entrance to the castle. The upper storeys were rebuilt in the 17th century.
