William Wilberforce, slavery abolitionist, Kingston upon Hull

William Wilberforce (1759–1833) was a British politician, philanthropist, and a leader of the movement to abolish the slave trade. Born in Kingston upon Hull, at the house in High Street that is a museum dedicated to his life and the slave trade, he attended the town’s grammar school, South Church Side. Wilberforce was elected Member of Parliament for Kingston upon Hull in 1780. In 1789, he made his first major speech in the House of Commons on the subject of abolition of slavery, in which he reasoned that the trade was morally reprehensible and an issue of natural justice. He headed the parliamentary campaign against the British slave trade for twenty years until the passage of the Slave Trade Act of 1807. Britain abolished slavery throughout its empire by the Slavery Abolition Act 1833 (with the notable exception of India). Further information in Wikipedia: LinkExternal link
