Chertsey Branch Line: Byfleet Curve towards Byfleet Junction
This is the little-used Byfleet Curve between Addlestone and Byfleet & New Haw railway stations, looking in the direction of the latter and Byfleet Junction. As can be seen the westbound line drops away on the left to pass under the former London & South Western Railway's main line before regaining height to join it at the junction.
The Byfleet Curve was built after the main Chertsey Branch was completed in 1848. Of currently available online maps the 1873 edition of the Ordnance Survey mapping does not show it, whereas the 1896 edition does. Even then the westbound curve was not shown, that only appearing in the edition of 1914.
This is the view from the public footpath pedestrian crossing of the railway. Care was taken by the Geographer before and while crossing this track to stop, then look and listen at all times for oncoming trains.
