Titled Guto Nyth Brân, the sculpture was made by Peter Nicholas. A plaque records that the work was commissioned by Mid Glamorgan County Council in partnership with Cynon Valley Borough Council and the Welsh Development Agency. The base was donated by Powell Dyffryn Ltd.

Guto Nyth Brân was the Welsh name of Griffith Morgan (1700–1737), an athlete whose many running feats in this area have become legendary. The Nos Galan is an annual 5 km (3.1 mile) race, run on Nos Galan (Welsh for New Year's Eve) in Mountain Ash as a memorial to Guto. It is run over the course of his first competitive race.
