Mousa: the broch
Scotland's best preserved broch is a mighty one, standing 13m in height on the western side of the isle of Mousa. It is seen here from the coastal side, showing the little door, which is just under 5 feet in height.

The broch was probably built in around 100BC. Once inside, the visitor today can still climb the tower by way of the remarkable staircase which remains intact, between the outer and inner circular walls (see HU4523 : Mousa: steps inside the broch).

The interior probably had at least two floors but today's visitor looks up from the ground floor to a circular view of the sky, surrounded by the various holes for lintels and accesses (see HU4523 : Mousa: inside the broch).
