Thames Barrier closed, downstream
Thames Barrier closed, downstream
The wet winter of 2013/14 with its frequent tidal surges and high river flows caused the Thames Barrier to be shut several times. This is one such occasion, on the early February spring tide, almost 61 years to the day since the floods that gave rise to the idea of the Barrier TQ4179 : Sixty-one years ago. It turned out to be a precautionary closure, since the river did not quite come up to the top of the river wall downstream, as can be seen at left.
River Thames
The River Thames rises at Thames Head in Gloucestershire on the slopes of the Cotswolds and flows generally eastward to its mouth near Southend in Essex. At 215 miles long it is one of the longest rivers in Britain, and the longest entirely within England. It is one of the most important rivers in Britain. LinkExternal link
Thames Barrier
The Thames Barrier is one of the largest movable flood barriers in the world. The Environment Agency runs and maintains the Thames Barrier as well as the capitalís other flood defences.

The barrier spans 520 metres across the River Thames near Woolwich, and it protects 125 square kilometres of central London from flooding caused by tidal surges.

It became operational in 1982 and has 10 steel gates that can be raised into position across the River Thames. When raised, the main gates stand as high as a five-storey building and as wide as the opening of Tower Bridge. Each main gate weighs 3,300 tonnes.
