Since the first Chinese settlers arrived in the city in the early 20th century, Manchester’s Chinatown has become second largest in the United Kingdom and the third largest in Europe and the city hosts the North of England's biggest Chinese New Year celebrations.

From 18th January, Manchester’s halls and streets were decorated with 3,000 Chinese lanterns; the bright red decorations stretching out across the colourful, tightly packed streets of Chinatown and Manchester's main shopping streets and, between 30 January and 1st February, a Chinese food market was held at St. Ann's Square with Lion Dancers performing there on the Friday and Saturday.

The programme of events, ranging from Chinese music and themed events at Manchester Art Gallery to a Tiger Pop-Up Bar and an arts and craft fair at Chinatown institution, the Yang Sing restaurant, culminated in the spectacular Dragon Parade watched by an estimated 75,000 people.
