Cow Close is a large horseshoe-shaped wood situated on the northern edge of the North York Moors National Park, close to the small village of Moorsholm. The woodland occupies the stream valleys of Cow Close Beck to the east and another smaller tributary to the west.
Predominantly ash,oak high forest with birch and rowan, it also contains locally abundant mature beech, sycamore and a small number of Scots pines.
It is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), as it is one of the few Ancient Woodland sites in Cleveland which remains in a largely semi natural condition.
