The soldier (one of a pair) and the stone wording beyond were rescued from Bedford, Burys and Co steelworks which they named "The Regent Works". Edward Bury (1794-1858) invented the bar frame locomotive, universally adopted by American railroads, and was a pioneer of standardisation in engineering. His happy association with Sheffield happened towards the end of his life.
