Tarbat Ness Portmahomack Lighthouse
Tarbat Ness/Portmahomack Lighthouse had a particular importance to the north fishing fleets of old. It marked the safe passage to Portmahomack.
In the days of sail powered open boats which were easily swamped easterly gales gave them real problems. The wind and swell meant that east facing ports like Helmsdale, Dunbeath, Lybster and even occasionally Wick became too dangerous to attempt landing.
Portmahomack is one of the few ports on the east coast that faces west and therefore much protected from the easterly wind and swell.
