SU9344 : Old granary at Home Farm, Peper Harow
taken 11 years ago, near to Peper Harow, Surrey, England

Old granary at Home Farm, Peper Harow
The building is generally described as a granary, but when this was a working farm - in the days of horse traction - the ground floor must surely have been used as a cart shed.
The Surrey volume of 'The Buildings of England' (compiled for the most part by Ian Nairn) has this to say:
'GRANARY, probably of c.1600, the style and dimensions of a good-size market hall. . . . One of the best vernacular buildings in the South of England'.
Personally, I am reminded of TL6130 : The Guildhall, Thaxted
Another remarkable survival is the cobbled surface at the entrance to the farmyard, which looks as if it has seen a few centuries come and go. I didn't think to take a close look at the material used, but it is plainly very tough - perhaps local ironstone.
For a view of the building from the far side of the farmyard, see: SU9344 : Granary at Home Farm, Peper Harow
