The Gaelic either translates as: 'Well of the Vats' or 'Well of the portion of land or farm to carry 60 cows or head of cattle, davoch.'

The village near this well was once inhabited by villagers suffering from a plague allegedly brought to the island by sailors who were shipwrecked off the south-east coast of Islay. Neighbours brought food and left it on a flat stone about half a mile away from the village. When the food was no longer collected, they knew that all the residents of this village had died.
