Obelisk in St Mary's churchyard, Bermondsey
Obelisk in St Mary's churchyard, Bermondsey
The obelisk, about 8 feet high, records the conveyance of the churchyard to the "Vestry of Bermondsey" (forerunner of the present London Borough of Southwark) on 17 May 1882 and its opening as a public park the following year. The Borough still maintains it as a public open space. This end of the site is part of the Scheduled Ancient Monument that represents the extent of the original Bermondsey Abbey.
