Barrier on the Derwent Walk above Ebchester
Barrier on the Derwent Walk above Ebchester
Constructed in 1867 and running from Swalwell on the River Tyne up to Consett, the Derwent Valley railway finally closed in 1963. The footway on the line of the old railway has been converted into a cycleway and forms part of National Cycle Network route 14.

The barrier, principally to deter motor cyclists from using the path, includes a chicane for pedestrians and cyclists, and a locked gate which gives access to maintenance vehicles.

The notice "Cyclists must give way to pedestrians and horses" is one that is often seen on cycle paths. What this actually means is far from clear; how does a faster vehicle "give way" to slower moving users of the path?
