SU6424 : The Thomas Lord, West Meon SU6424 : Sign for the Thomas Lord, West MeonAs may be surmised from the fact that the Yorkshire-born Thomas Lord (1755-1832, founder of the famous Lord's Cricket Ground and home 0f the MCC since 1787)) is buried in West Meon church, it is he that the cricketing plaque outside this pub in West Meon commemorates.
The fact that the DNB lists a comtemporaneous 'ornithologist' (fl.1796) of that name hardly merits his linkage to West Meon. An artist protege of Rev. Matthew William Peters RA, that Thomas Lord's only notable achievement listed was 114 plates painted and engraved by him for publication at London in folio numbers from 1791-1796 under the title 'Lord's Entire New System of Ornithology, or Oecumenical History of British Birds'.
