Ash-art in Lower Wood Nature Reserve
Ash-art in Lower Wood Nature Reserve
Some of the branches have been formed to create a round structure which would seem as yet incomplete. For a full view of the sculpture see > Link.

Update - On 24 February 2016, Nick Ball, the artist, kindly contacted me, writing "that is my sculpture in aswellthorpe and it is complete. the primary function of "lobster pot" are observations in negative space. this years contribution just completed ive called "cup" but you can make your own mind up. this one has less negative space and is a homage to clarence cliff. thank you for noticing the work. there are others but they are being obscured by the coppice"

This area has recently been cleared and all smaller trees were coppiced, with the cut stems tidily arranged in bundles, ready for collection. The tall trees left standing are hornbeams.

Lower Wood > Link has existed since the end of the last ice age. It is recorded in the Domesday book and has supplied the local population with timber for hundreds of years up until the 1970s. A legacy of the wood's working past are the many coppiced trees > Link dating from the times when ash poles were supplied to a brush-making factory in nearby Wymondham. The woodland is also one of the best places in Norfolk to see hornbeam trees (Carpinus betulus) > Link. The sycamores that grow here are in the process of being removed - they are not native to the UK and threaten plant growth on the woodland floor. The 37 hectares of ancient coppice and woodland > Link are now a nature reserve and SSSI, managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust and traversed by a number of tracks and paths.
