One of two similar coal hole plates outside the Chong Wah Chinese supermarket, formerly the School Board offices, built 1898. The plate is inscribed: 'Hayward Brothers 187 & 189 Union Street Borough March 10th 1882 Coal Plate'. The coal hole allowed the easy delivery of coal, generally in sacks and often from horse-drawn carts, to the house's coal bunker.

R. Henly & Co. was established 1783, becoming a manufacturer of iron coal-hole covers at 187 & 189 Union Street. Edward and William Hayward bought out Henly's in 1848 and, in 1854, became Hayward Brothers, continuing to make coal-hole covers. The company seems to have ceased trading in the 1970's, which co-incidentally is when the Smokeless Fuel Acts and the big switch to gas central heating probably put paid to the coal-hole business.
