Humber Bank, Kingston upon Hull
Humber Bank, Kingston upon Hull
Humber Bank was originally the ancient way between Hessle and Kingston upon Hull and its forerunner, Wyke upon Hull. Humber Bank ran parallel with and next to the Humber estuary. Contemporary records (1301) state that inundations washed away a considerable quantity of land into the Humber; likewise bodies en route to be buried at Hessle and their attendants. Humber Bank only became separated from the estuary when land was reclaimed for the Hull & Selby railway and, later, the construction of the western docks. Today, Humber Bank exists as a public footpath between Neptune Street and St James Street. By 1835, the eastern continuation of Humber bank became known as Belle Vue Terrace and Bath Place, both of which have subsequently disappeared consequential of redevelopment. Depicted is the stretch of footpath between Alfred Street and St James Street, looking west. The wall on the left originally formed the boundary with the former railway that terminated at the goods shed, Kingston Street / Railway Street. Note the use of stone setts to pave the footpath.

The above is part of the Public Right of Way No.26 that extends from St James Street to William Wright Dock. Information on the City Council's 'Rights of way improvement plan 2009 - 2019': LinkExternal link
