Seed and The Cathedral of St John, Salford
Seed and The Cathedral of St John, Salford
Andrew McKeown’s sculpture is of a sycamore seed, which has been enlarged one hundred times. Cast in iron, the sculpture represents new life and growth emerging from the decline of the traditional engineering and manufacturing industries of the area. It was commissioned for the Irwell Sculpture Trail in 2002.

Seed is set at ground level in the middle of the open area adjacent to St Philips Church which is located in the Chapel Street area of Salford. The sculpture symbolises the future and the potential this area has to grow and prosper from the seeds that were planted by the 2002 Regeneration Strategy. It is part of the Irwell Sculpture Trail.

Salford Cathedral

The Cathedral Church of St John the Evangelist, on Chapel Street is the Roman Catholic cathedral for the City of Salford and is known simply as Salford Cathedral.

It was originally built between 1844 and 1848 as St John's Church, Salford, its design, the first cruciform Catholic church to be built in England after the Reformation, was closely modelled on a number of noted medieval churches. Two years later, in 1850, St John's was elevated to cathedral status.

The Cathedral is a Grade II listed building (Historic England List Entry Number: 1386115 LinkExternal link ).
