The building behind the memorial is on the site of the former headquarters of the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU).

The TGWU was part of the TUC, which was first established in Salford in 1868 in the Three Crowns pub in King Street. The Art Deco headquarters stood on this site until 2003, when the building was demolished and replaced with these modern luxury apartments, opened in 2005.
Lancashire Fusiliers Boer War Memorial, Salford

This War Memorial for soldiers of the Boer War stands at the corner of Chapel St and Oldfield Rd in Salford. It was the work of sculptor George Frampton RA and is a replica of the memorial at SD8010 : Lancashire Fusiliers War Memorial, Whitehead Gardens in Bury. Known as the "Cheering Fusilier", it was originally unveiled on July 13, 1905 by Edward VII, accompanied by Queen Alexandra, before a crowd of thousands, as part of a Royal visit to Manchester and Salford.

The memorial has recently been restored to its former glory as part of the urban regeneration plan being carried out in the Chapel Street area. It was re-dedicated 24th June 2012 (Salford Council press release).

The memorial is a Grade II listed structure (List entry Number: 1386163 LinkExternal link Historic England).
