Loch Awe, Pass of Brander
Loch Awe, Pass of Brander
Loch Awe is the longest freshwater loch in Scotland, measuring 25 miles from end to end with an average width over half a mile. Its surface area of almost 15 square miles makes it the third largest freshwater loch in Scotland by area. It runs approximately south-west to north-east, roughly parallel to the two sea lochs of Loch Etive and Loch Fyne.

The road at the side of the loch is the A85 LinkExternal link , the main road to the west coast at Connel and beyond to Oban which runs along the narrow Pass of Brander, where the River Awe slices through the southern slope of Ben Cruachan at the head of Loch Awe.
The A85
The A85 is a major road running for 115 miles from Oban to Dundee, providing a nearly continuous route linking the east and west coasts of Scotland, passing some of the country’s highest mountains.

Some statistics seem to show that the stretch of the A85 between Oban and Tyndrum is among the ten most dangerous roads in Scotland (LinkExternal link BBC Scotland)
